A teacher killed in the Georgia school shooting was reportedly celebrating her birthday by sharing cake with her students.

Cristina Irimie, 53, had treated the children to party food to mark her own birthday, with her heartbroken friend Corneliu Caprar explaining how she wanted to celebrate with her school children. Caprar went on to explain how kind-hearted Irimie also couldn't have children with her husband, and treated the students as her own kids.

The grieving friend told CNN : "She decided to bake a cake and bring pizza to her class the day she died so she could celebrate her birthday with her kids." Cristina has turned 53 earlier in August. It comes after a harrowing account of how students watched their teacher Richard Aspinwall take his last breath after being shot.

Stephanie Reyna, 17, and classmate Brayan Maldonado, also 17, told ABC News that they were in the classroom when their teacher, Richard 'Coach' Aspinwall , went to check on the commotion in the hallway, as scared students hid in the corner on the floor.

When they looked up, they saw their teacher "trying to crawl back to us ... we just think he was trying to get to us," says Reyna. "A couple minutes passed by. He’s taking his breaths," Maldonado said. "And then we hear his final breaths."

Apalachee High School students who feared for their lives as a gunman opened fire sent their parents harrowing text messages as they barricaded themselves in classrooms.

Two students and two teachers were killed and nine others were injured when a shooter opened fire shortly after 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Police said suspect Colt Gray, 14 , is in custody. He will be tried as an adult. The father of the Georgia school shooting suspect, Colin Gray, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder this afternoon, reports The New York Times.

A classroom full of students sitting in math class says the terrifying moment began when they started hearing 'banging on the lockers' in the hallway. Their teacher, Aspinwall, went to go check on the noises, which is when the students began hearing 'popping' sounds.

Reyna and Maldano say that's when they hid. They were hiding for a few minutes when they noticed their teacher lying in the doorway "just laying there," Reyna said. "That’s when we realized that our classroom door was still open."
