Freeze Warning in Effect for Northeast Minnesota: Sub-Freezing Temperatures Pose Risks to Crops

    2024-09-08

Residents Advised to Protect Sensitive Vegetation and Outdoor Plumbing

DULUTH — Issued by the National Weather Service at 2:27 AM on September 7, 2024.

Freeze Warning: Temperatures Drop as Low as 25°F in St. Louis Counties

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Duluth has issued a Freeze Warning for Central and North St. Louis Counties, including Ely, Hibbing, and recreational areas such as Voyageurs National Park and the Boundary Waters western area. The warning remains in effect until 8 AM CDT this morning as temperatures are expected to drop as low as 25°F, posing significant risks to sensitive vegetation and unprotected outdoor plumbing.

Frost and Freeze Conditions Threaten Plants and Plumbing

Residents in the affected areas, including the Tribal Lands of the Bois Forte Band and Lake Vermilion and Nett Lake regions, are advised to take immediate precautions. The sub-freezing temperatures could damage or kill crops and other sensitive plants. Homeowners should also be mindful of outdoor plumbing; it's recommended to wrap, drain, or allow pipes to drip slowly to prevent freezing.

Morning Frost and Fog to Clear with Sunrise

This morning's frost and patchy fog are expected to dissipate with the rising sun, bringing clearer conditions as the day progresses. While today's freeze warning is the immediate concern, the outlook for the upcoming week remains relatively calm with low probability for widespread hazardous weather from Sunday through Friday. Skywarn spotter activation will not be necessary today or tonight.

    Precautionary Actions for Residents

Residents are urged to cover or move sensitive plants indoors and ensure that any exposed pipes are properly insulated against the cold. Those in recreational areas, such as campers or visitors to Voyageurs National Park, should also take steps to protect their gear and ensure that water supplies do not freeze.
