Report: Disgruntled Maple Leafs Forward Seeking Trade From Toronto

    By Antonio Losada,

    2024-09-07

The Toronto Maple Leafs have a situation brewing, and it has to do with restricted free agent Nick Robertson, who remains firm in his request for a trade less than two weeks before the training camp kicks off.

According to TSN’s Pierre LeBrun, Robertson, who first submitted his trade request to the Leafs on July 1, continues to push for a change of scenery despite the possibility of finding a role as a third- or fourth-line winger in Toronto's lineup next season.

“[Robertson] still would prefer a change of address,” LeBrun said during an appearance on TSN's OverDrive on September 5 . “But that has been slow going on that."

LeBrun also added that Robertson is training back home and awaiting a resolution.

"Got a pretty powerful agent in Pat Brisson, but checking with a couple of different people involved," the NHL insider said. "The process certainly hasn’t moved along as fast as I think his camp would like."

Robertson, 22, is coming off his entry-level contract with the Maple Leafs, but despite his trade request, the franchise has shown no urgency to move forward in a trade.

General manager Brad Treliving is not rushing into a decision, and last July, he acknowledged Robertson’s frustration but still aimed at trying to convince him to stay put.

“I obviously have known that there was some frustration with Nick on his behalf," Treliving said on July 2 . "We look at Nick as an excellent player and there’s a great opportunity for Nick here.”

Robertson played 56 games for Toronto last season, scoring 14 goals and providing 13 assists for 27 total points. Although Treliving has suggested that Robertson could still have a significant role on the team, it's fair to assume the winger remains unsatisfied with his role, thus pursuing a trade.

Without a contract in place, Robertson is not expected to attend camp if he remains unsigned by the start of it, according to LeBrun.

Also, if Robertson doesn't sign a deal by the December 1 deadline imposed by the NHL, he will be forced to forfeit the season and not play until the 2025-26 campaign.
