Maryland high school shooter, 16, identified and arrested after gunning down classmate, 15, in bathroom

Police have arrested the 16-year-old who is accused of shooting a classmate Friday on his first day at a Maryland high school.

Jaylen Rushawn Prince is the suspect now being charged as an adult for "murder, first and second-degree assault, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony/crime of violence," the Harford County Sheriff’s Office said.

The teen was apprehended minutes after the fatal shooting of the classmate at Joppatowne High School, found attempting to break into a nearby apartment in an effort to evade capture.

The details of what transpired between Jaylen Rushawn Prince and his alleged victim, 15-year-old Warren Curtis Grant, remain unclear, though authorities have confirmed the two were acquainted. According to police, the shooting occurred around 12:35 p.m. in a first-floor boy’s restroom at Joppatowne High School following a confrontation. It was Prince’s first day attending the school after classes began earlier in the week.

Grant was dragged into the hallway by fellow students after being shot, where school nurses provided aid before he was airlifted to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Despite their efforts, Grant later succumbed to his injuries.

Prince fled the scene but was apprehended around 12:50 p.m. He remained unidentified until Saturday, with police confirming that the suspect had prior involvement with law enforcement. Though officers did not confirm a juvenile record, they reported over 10 incidents since 2022 in which Prince had been listed as a victim, witness, or suspect in previous investigations by the Harford County Sheriff’s Office.

As of yet, the firearm used in the shooting has not been located.

This tragic incident came just two days after another shooting at Apalachee High School in northern Georgia, where 14-year-old Colt Gray allegedly killed two students and two teachers, wounding nine others. Colt, who used an AR-15-style rifle reportedly gifted by his father for Christmas, had previously been accused of making school shooting threats. Both Colt and his father, Colin Gray, have been charged with murder and face the possibility of life imprisonment after their initial court appearances
