Fire Weather Watch Issued for Southeast Wyoming: Gusty Winds and Low Humidity Increase Fire Risk

Residents Urged to Avoid Outdoor Burning as Warm and Dry Conditions Persist

CHEYENNE — Issued by the National Weather Service at 1:23 AM MDT on September 8, 2024.

Fire Weather Watch: Critical Fire Conditions Expected on Monday

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Cheyenne has issued a Fire Weather Watch for portions of southeast Wyoming, including Niobrara, Converse, and Laramie counties and adjacent areas such as the Thunder Basin National Grassland and North Laramie Range. The watch is in effect from Monday morning through Monday evening, with gusty west winds and low humidity forecasted to create conditions favorable for rapid fire spread.

Gusty Winds and Low Humidity Increase Fire Risk

The Fire Weather Watch highlights the risk posed by sustained west to west-northwest winds of 15 to 20 mph, with gusts up to 30 to 35 mph. Coupled with low humidity levels between 10 to 15 percent, any fires that develop could spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended, and residents should exercise extreme caution with any activities that could potentially spark a fire.

Warm and Dry Conditions Persist Through the Week

Throughout the remainder of the week, the forecast calls for warm and dry conditions, which will continue to elevate fire weather concerns in the region. Although a few isolated showers and thunderstorms are possible today, no significant rainfall is expected to alleviate the dry conditions.

Precautionary Actions for Residents and Outdoor Enthusiasts

    • Avoid Outdoor Burning: Refrain from burning debris or using equipment that could generate sparks.
    • Monitor Fire Updates: Stay informed about changing fire weather conditions, especially on Monday when the risk is highest.
    • Be Prepared: Have an emergency plan in place in case a fire does develop near your area.

    Spotter Information and Activation

Spotter activation will not be required, as no severe weather is anticipated beyond the fire weather concerns. However, residents should remain vigilant and report any signs of wildfire activity to local authorities immediately.
