Rickie Fowler waves to the crowd

Rickie Fowler’s all orange ensemble at the Open Championship is always eye-catching but even more sensational was this incredible putt at St Andrews back in 2010.

Fowler drained this monster on the Old Course’s iconic 17th hole, rolling it in from a ludicrous 126 feet.

The confidence you need to get this right. And no wonder the crowd went wild.

Why does Rickie Fowler wear orange on Sundays?

Fowler chooses orange in those final rounds in remembrance of his alma mater Oklahoma State University, where he was a student in 2007 and 2008. The Cowboys, who have won 11 men’s national championships in golf, wear orange and black.

By being named the nation’s best collegiate golfer in 2008 (by the Friends of Golf and the Golf Coaches Association of America), Fowler made history at Oklahoma State.

Throughout his professional career, Fowler has worn orange, initially from top to toe. In recent years, he has toned it down to just his shirt, shoes or trousers in isolation.

“Not many people wear orange so it’s a good way to stand out a bit,” Fowler said at the time. “I played college golf at Oklahoma State, school colors are orange and black.”

Fowler pondered not wearing his characteristic orange to the 2019 Open Championship, which took place at the Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland. The colour is linked with the Orange Order, a controversial unionist group centred in Northern Ireland.

“A few of my Oklahoma State teammates wore the same colors, so at the time it was a bit of a bonding thing,” Fowler said at the time (via the Belfast Telegraph) . “But nobody really does it on tour. I like to think of it as my own little personal style.”
