Red Sox DFA infielder, option reliever back to Triple-A

The Boston Red Sox are nearing the end of the 2024 campaign, and as they're hoping to make the playoffs, Alex Cora's team is making a few changes.

After it was reported that the Red Sox were calling up starting pitcher Richard Fitts from Triple-A Worcester, the team had to clear a spot on the MLB roster and also the 40-man roster.

To make room for Fitts, Boston designated infielder Bobby Dalbec for assignment and optioned reliever Chase Shugart back to Triple-A.

Dalbec, 29, was thought to be the first baseman of the future earlier in his career, but he struggled in the big leagues. In 331 games across five seasons, he hit just .222 with a .714 OPS (with both of those numbers getting lower each year). If he clears through waivers, he may choose free agency and try to find another team to get a fresh start.

Shugart, 27, has been up with Boston twice this season, appearing in three games and allowing four earned runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out six batters over six innings.
