PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Experts say people who live in cities tend to wake up more throughout the night. Here are some tips on how to prioritize your sleep health.

“There are lots of distractions and things to do in the city that could come in the way of sleep and compete for sleep,” said Dr. Indira Gurubhagavatula, director of Penn Medicine’s Sleep Medicine Fellowship. She says if you live in the city, you should do what you can to keep a normal sleep routine.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, most adults need at least seven hours of sleep each night. More than 1 in 3 do not get the recommended amount.

Gurubhagavatula suggests getting enough exercise, managing stress levels, limiting caffeine and alcohol consumption and keeping a consistent bedtime and wakeup time.

Gurubhagavatula says many of her patients credit exercise for a better night’s sleep, as it gets them “good and tired.”

She also says if you work odd hours, set firm limits with family and friends so your sleep isn’t disturbed.

“So that they get the space, time and quietness to get the sleep that they need. And that’s a family affair. Everybody needs to be part of the solution.”

U.S. News & World Report ranked Philadelphia dead last for sleep health in 2023 .
