The city hopes to solve its public-transportation problem

New York City — Just last week while reloading my MetroCard, I couldn't help but shake my head. After all, seeing two guys hurdle over the turnstile made me wonder: Were they inspired by the recent Olympics or what?

According to a report, each day over a million New Yorkers refuse to pay for public transit in New York.

Unfortunately for the city, losing out on millions daily leaves a major hole in how much revenue the city generates.

As for what's the solution, the city is now setting its sights on better policing major transit stations.

"The truth is passengers don’t pay because they can get away with it," Pamela Paul wrote in the NY Times. "The harder truth is that the city lets them."

Only time will tell if better policing is the solution.

Perhaps a "pay-what-you-can" slogan may be the answer to the riddle. After all, though such a slogan by no means excuses refusing to honor the fare, it will incentivize New Yorkers to contribute... something.
