Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables gives props to unlikely and unfortunate hero from Sooners’ win over Houston

The Oklahoma Sooners won a barn burner against the Houston Cougars on Saturday night when they really shouldn't have. That statement can go two ways -- they shouldn't have, as before the game, we were all predicting the Sooners would win by at least 20. They shouldn't have as in, they should have lost the game due to how poorly they played.

The Sooners were nearly 30-point favorites against the Cougars, yet, won by just four points, in a game that was just ugly to watch on the offensive side of the ball. The offense, which still struggled last week, even in that 51-3 win over the Temple Owls, was even worse against Houston.

We have heard already that head coach Brent Venables just harps on how the offense has to be better. He's somewhat called out quarterback Jackson Arnold and kept it real with him about how he played, which is what you want your coach to do. But he also called out the punter, for having a good game.

Yes, the punter and his quote were one of the best you will see or hear.

“We did enough things wrong to lose… I’m coming into the press conference and bragging about our punter," Venables told the media after the game.

The Sooners were bad, like really bad on offense, so much so that the best player on the field was the punter because that's who we saw what felt like the most. The Oklahoma Sooners offense is now 5-26 on third down conversions, which is one of their biggest issues overall as a team, which is also why we are seeing the punter so much. And, to be honest, no one is innocent on offense, even Jackson Arnold's play wasn't great.

No offense to Luke Elzinga, the punter, but no one wants to listen to the coach go after a game and say that he was better than the offense, respectfully. The Sooners have to get this issue solved with their offense. Let's hope they don't get booed again by their own fans.
