(Alabama)- Slang evolves with each generation, and Alabama residents may have noticed that the younger crowd, particularly Gen Alpha, has adopted some new phrases. One of the latest trending terms is “fanum tax,” which may leave some scratching their heads. Just like how past generations had their own unique expressions, today’s youth are creating fresh slang that spreads quickly through social media and online communities.

    What is "Fanum Tax"?

According to Slang Network, “fanum tax” is a playful phrase used by Gen Alpha to describe the act of taking food from a friend. The term originated from Twitch streamer Fanum, a member of the AMP group, who frequently “taxed” his fellow streamers’ food during their live broadcasts. This action alone led fans to adopt the term, and eventually, the AMP crew began using it themselves during their streams.

An example of the phrase in context would be mentioning a food item to someone and getting a reply similar to, "Oh, don't worry. I'll be by for my fanum tax in a bit."

    The Phrase’s Viral Moment

Though already popular among Fanum’s followers, “fanum tax” truly went viral in October 2023, thanks to its inclusion in the Gen Alpha parody song Sticking Out Your Gyat for the Rizzler. The song blends multiple contemporary slang terms, and one of its quirky lines—“ur so fanum tax”—fueled the phrase’s popularity even more. The song became a sensation online, further embedding "fanum tax" in modern youth culture.

    An Act Turned Slang

While “fanum tax” may not yet have widespread use in Alabama, don’t be surprised if you hear it pop up in conversations with younger relatives or kids. As language continues to evolve, keeping up with new slang can be a fun way to engage with younger generations and see how they express their unique perspectives on life.

A similar term to fanum tax is the girlfriend tax. The girlfriend tax refers to the practice where a girlfriend consumes a portion of your food, often justified as compensation for the challenges she faces in the relationship. This taxation typically occurs when she claims not to be hungry but proceeds to share your meal.
