Did Justin Fields do enough to keep Pittsburgh Steelers starting job?

There was rightly some thought that quarterback Justin Fields could do enough in the Week 1 game to keep the Pittsburgh Steelers ' starting job after he was thrust into the role once fellow signal-caller Russell Wilson was ruled out with his calf issue.

However, it was going to take a great effort from Fields against the Atlanta Falcons to get the job done, but unfortunately for him, we didn't see that on Sunday in the Steelers 18-10 Week 1 win.

Fields completed 17-of-23 passes for 156 yards and added 14 carries for 57 yards. He didn't turn the ball over, but he also didn't find pay dirt once. Instead, the Steelers had to settle for a whopping six field goals from the reliable leg of kicker Chris Boswell, who set multiple records in the process.

A lot of Fields' passes were short throws, and he struggled with accuracy on some of them. He started attacking downfield more as the game progressed but didn't do much of it overall. It isn't clear if that was just the decisions Fields was making, or if the Steelers didn't trust him to push it.

We got an idea it was the latter after Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith called a run play on a third-and-6 at the Falcons' 41-yard line on Pittsburgh's first offensive series of the game and settled for a field goal. That is not a strategy the Steelers can stick with.

Long story short, there doesn't seem to be a big difference between the Fields we saw in Chicago and the Fields we're seeing in Pittsburgh, and that isn't going to get the Steelers to where they want to be.

It was always going to take a lot to unseat Wilson as the starter, and Fields didn't do enough to accomplish that feat in Week 1.

Now, the attention turns to Wilson, who will likely be healthy enough to play after he reportedly was ready to go on Sunday. Adding a little extra juice to Week 2, Wilson will be making his first trip back to Denver to face the Broncos.
