Reactions are continuing to flood in following the announcement that Kendrick Lamar has been selected to headline the 2025 Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show. While many music fans expressed excitement over Kendrick’s selection—especially after the release of his latest hit track, “Not Like Us”—others have raised eyebrows at the decision, questioning why New Orleans native Lil Wayne wasn’t chosen to perform in his own hometown.

Rappers turned podcasters Cam’ron and Ma$e have joined the chorus of voices expressing their dissatisfaction with the choice. On their show, “It’s What It Is,” Cam’ron shared his thoughts, stating, “Look, I love Kendrick Lamar; I think he’s one of the top artists of this generation, period,” before adding that he “hate the selection. It’s in New Orleans, and you don’t get Lil Wayne? That’s what we doing? There’s no reason why Lil Wayne should not be performing at the Super Bowl… it’s one person who’s stopping this,” he insinuated.

Ma$e then chimed in, emphasizing that “hating at this age is crazy.” Cam’ron further mentioned that “This is some back story sh*t going on.” Here’s what else they had to say:

The disappointment isn’t limited to the duo’s podcast. Lil Wayne’s engineer and manager, Fabian Marasciullo, also voiced his frustrations over the decision to have Kendrick Lamar headline the event instead of his client, who hails from New Orleans, Louisiana. Marasciullo expressed his feelings candidly: “Confused. Disappointed. Angry. But most of all, inspired. We will never again be in a position or have the [goat emoji] in a position where we are at the mercy of someone else’s decision. We will make the decisions.”

Although Lamar has not yet reacted to the conversations happening online, he did release a statement following his selection for the big gig. He stated, “Rap music is still the most impactful genre to date. And I’ll be there to remind the world why. They got the right one.” Lamar continued, “What’s the deal, everybody? My name’s Kendrick Lamar, and I’ll be performing at Super Bowl 59. Will you be pulling up? I hope so. You know there’s only one opportunity to win a championship, no round twos… I wouldn’t want you to miss it. Meet me in New Orleans, February 9, 2025. Wear your best dress too, even if you’re watching from home.”

Because nobody watching at home actually gives a shit where the game is being played so the act having local roots is irrelevant.
