ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Cardinals first baseman Paul Goldschmidt may not be having the greatest of seasons on the field, but off the field he is still proving to be an MVP-caliber person.

On Monday, MLB announced the nominees for the Roberto Clemente Award, which annually recognizes the player who best represents the game through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field, and fourth consecutive year, Goldschmidt was named the Cardinals nominee for the award .

It marks the ninth overall time Goldschmidt has been nominated for the award since he became an every day regular in the big leagues.

Goldschmidt has routinely hosted an annual free baseball clinic and in addition, back in June, he, in partnership with the Gateway Region YMCA and Boniface Foundation, was a key figure in the opening of a $5 million adaptive sports complex at the YMCA in South County .

The complex, which has a synthetic turf baseball field named after Goldschmidt, features cushioned, barrier-free surface and dugout to provide accessibility for players with disabilities.

In addition, the complex also has an accessible field, walking track, and an accessible sensory-rich playground.

Beginning Monday, fans can vote for the Roberto Clemente Award presented by Capital One via MLBTogether.com/clemente21 (in both English and Spanish). The site, which will feature bios of each of the nominees, will allow fans to vote until the end of the season on Sunday, Sept. 29.
