THREE sisters who inherited a 40-year-old dime were shocked to discover that it could be worth over $500,000.
The valuable coin had been kept in a bank vault and was only passed onto the sisters after their brother recently died.
The dime is reportedly just one of the two known to exist, but it is missing the “S” mint mark for San Francisco, AP reported .
It was struck by the U.S. Mint in San Francisco in 1975.
The sisters explained that their mother and brother had bought the coin in 1978 for financial security.
The family operated a dairy farm and purchased the dime for $18,200, which would amount to roughly $90,000 today.
One of the sisters knew of the coin’s existence but had never seen it until last year.
It seems the coin remained in a bank vault after it was purchased until the sisters’ recent discovery.
The siblings have chosen to remain anonymous due to the high potential worth of the coin.
According to currency specialist Ian Russell, president of GreatCollections, the coin could be worth more than $500,000.
The company is handling the online auction of the coin, which will continue until late next month.
The second of the rare coins was sold at an auction in 2019 for $456,000.
Coin collectors had heard tales about these two precious dimes but did not know their whereabouts until the late 1970s.
“They were hidden for decades,” Russell said.
“Most major collectors and dealers have never seen one.”
Russell said that the brother had reached out to him about seven years ago and told him about the dime.
But Russell, however, had kept the coin secret.
She was shocked when Russell told one of the sisters about the coin’s potential worth.
