Selena Gomez shares why she's not able to carry her own baby

Opening up about expanding her future family and the difficulties she’d face after years of health struggles, Selena Gomez got candid during her Vanity Fair cover story interview.

“I haven’t ever said this,” Selena revealed, “but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children. I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while.” Gomez explained.

Selena went on to note that despite the obstacle, she still plans to have children, expressing her gratitude the medical alternatives available. “It’s not necessarily the way I envisioned it,” SelGo, who has been public about her battle with lupus, said. “I thought it would happen the way it happens for everyone. [But] I’m in a much better place with that. I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me.”

As for the next chapter of her personal life, Selena added, “I’m excited for what that journey will look like, but it’ll look a little different. At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’ll be mine. It’ll be my baby.”

Questions of future marriage and family seem to be following Selena more than ever before, since she and boyfriend Benny Blanco made things publicly official around December 2023.

That being said, Selena had plans for motherhood long before they got together. “Before I met my boyfriend, I was single for five years, with the exception of going on a few dates,” she shared. “And I was like, ‘Okay, if this is the vibe, then what is the most important thing to me? Family.’”

As it turns out, Benny also has babies on the brain, admitting to Howard Stern earlier this year that having kids was his "next goal on the box.”

Repeating the sentiments she told Time back in May about Benny’s headline making comment, Gomez told Vanity Fair , “He can’t lie. After the interview, I was dying laughing. Like, ‘Anything else you wanted to put out there?’”

“I’ve never been loved this way," Selena went on to share about her romanced with Benny, “He’s just been a light. A complete light in my life. He’s my best friend. I love telling him everything.”

But even with not dealing with that “Same Old Love,” the pair feel no pressure to tie the knot anytime soon. “We always make sure we’re protecting what we have, but there’s no rules,” Selena shared. “I want him to always be himself. I always want to be myself.”

And though she’s not ready to settle on a date quite yet, if or when the day does arrive, one thing Selena does know for sure is, “I’m not changing my name no matter what,” she insisted. “I am Selena Gomez. That’s it.”
