Rob McElhenney makes firm statement on Wrexham head coach's future

Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney has hailed manager Phil Parkinson as the Welsh soccer club's rise up the England pyramid looks set to continue.

The Red Dragons are sitting pretty at the top of League One after five games. Parkinson's men have won four, drawn one, and lost none . The 56-year-old, who has already guided Wrexham to back-to-back promotions , has accumulated more points since the start of 2022/23 than any other club in England's top five leagues.

Wrexham has won 212 points in that time, with promotion to the Championship, England's section tier soccer league, on the line this campaign. "And it’s all because of this man," McElhenney said of Parkinson, quote-tweeting a picture of the head coach on X. "In Phil we trust."

Wrexham's last outing was a 3-0 win over Shrewsbury at the Racecourse Ground. Ollie Palmer, Elliot Lee, and Jack Marriott got the goals for the Red Dragons. “Five games in and I know it doesn’t count for a great deal but equally I think we’ve got to be pleased with the work so far this season,” Parkinson said.

“Having the ability to handle being at the top and that extra kind of expectancy it creates, of course we’ve been there. The run with Notts County in the National League, every game was full on and you had to win every game and had to perform at your best to keep winning.

"So yes, we’ve got a group who are used to living with that and hopefully we’ll continue to thrive under that bit of added pressure.”

Wrexham could decide to further strengthen their squad, as Parkinson has two free spaces in his roster. However, the head coach is keen to give his existing roster a chance to prove what they've got.

"At the moment we will roll with what we have got," he added. "We have got some good players who haven't figured much yet so we don't want to bring someone in for the sake of it. We have had young Josh Adam in from Manchester City on trial.

"He is a player we would like to keep because he has got real talent but in terms of a senior player coming in at the moment, we have got enough of those fighting for places."

Parkinson will lead his men against Salford City in the Football League Trophy on Tuesday night, before traveling to face high-spenders Birmingham City at the weekend. The Blues, who NFL legend Tom Brady owns a stake in, spent north of $26 million on transfers in the summer just gone.
