Where To Eat & Drink With Your Dog

If there’s one thing San Franciscans take seriously, it's a codependent relationship with their dogs. Thankfully, most restaurants with an outdoor seating situation allow you to bring along a four-legged pal—but some work better than others. Here are a few of our favorite places that have lots of room to eat and drink with your real best friend.

THE SPOTS

Palm City

Palm City is a welcoming neighborhood wine shop in the Sunset where families, regulars, and groups of friends come together to enjoy incredible hoagies and wine from their extension selection. The friendly vibe extends to dogs, too—there’s a designated can of treats by the door and plenty of sidewalk seating if you want to let your furry friend sprawl out while you enjoy your sandwich.

Devil's Teeth Baking Company

Devil’s Teeth’s locations in the Sunset and the Richmond both bake their own dog treats in-house. So the next time you’re heading to the beach or Golden Gate Park for your doggy play date, swing by the bakery first. They also make fantastic food for real people, like excellent cookies, pastries, and cakes, and a breakfast sandwich we dream about weekly.

Zazie

One way to make Monday nights better? Head to Zazie. On Mondays, the Cole Valley bistro allows dogs on their parklet and back patio, and they give you $10 off a bottle of wine if you bring yours. It’s a win-win: you and all your other dog parent friends can meet up and share dishes like French onion soup, charcuterie, seafood stew, and wine. Plus, they have dog treats at the ready.

Kitchen Story

This Castro brunch spot has lots of pancakes, thick slabs of bacon, and mimosas, all of which you’ll most likely end up waiting in line for. But it’s okay, because the outdoor seating is plentiful and your dog will probably end up making friends and/or meeting their soulmate while you wait.

Del Popolo

The subterranean garden deck at Del Popolo is open to “well-behaved and potty-trained dogs,” so if yours fits those requirements (and we sincerely hope it does), head right over. The Lower Nob Hill spot specializes in wood-fired pizzas with bubbly, charred crusts that are delicious—and great for sneaking to your kibble-averse dog under the table.

Red's Java House

Red’s Java House in the Embarcadero is one of our favorite places to eat and drink outside—there are views of the bridge and bay, plenty of cold drinks on tap, and, in very SF fashion, burgers served on sourdough rolls. Their expansive patio has tons of space for you and your dog to chill, soak in the scenery, and maybe share an order of fries.

Farley's East

This Potrero Hill coffee shop allows dogs inside and on the astro-turfed parklet, and they have treats readily available for your beloved fur-baby. It’s one of our favorite spots to sip on a latte and get work done , thanks to the abundance of natural light and great espresso drinks. When you need to click-clack away on a laptop without leaving your dog in a crate at home, this is where to go.

Kona's Street Market

This bar in SoMa is named after the owner's pitbull—so it’s no surprise that the spot is extremely dog-friendly. Their cocktail menu is split into different regions from around the world and highlights ingredients from each—you’ll see ube coconut cream, pandan, and shochu in the “Asia + Pacific” section, or horchata and mezcal under “Americas.” The drinks are strong and refreshing, and if you’re lucky you’ll catch a glimpse of the eponymous dog chilling in a booth.

Hook Fish Co.

Hook Fish Co. is only two blocks from Ocean Beach, making it the perfect place to swing by before you let your dog loose at their version of the best playground in the world. The seafood spot has tons of outdoor benches where you can get into some fresh fish tacos, burritos, sandwiches, and salads, plus agua frescas, wine, and beer.

Delarosa

Both the Yerba Buena and Marina locations of this Italian spot have outdoor seating areas where you might actually see a French bulldog with a legitimate seat at the table. Settle in with some meatballs and a burrata pizza if you’re here for dinner—or come for brunch, when Delarosa tends to be a little less crowded.

Stable Cafe

The garden patio at this breakfast and lunch spot in the Mission is like the lush, secluded backyard we wish we had. It’s super spacious and shaded by plenty of trees, and is a great place for your dog to take a little afternoon nap while you chill with a book, a latte, and a panini.

Flywheel Coffee Roasters

Dogs are welcome on the spacious back patio and indoors at this roller-rink sized cafe in the Haight. That means you’re free to spend a couple of hours nursing a cappuccino and a croissant with your pet by your side, though they’ll likely get distracted by the revolving door of other designer dogs trotting through the concrete-coated seating area. Flywheel is also right at the edge of Golden Gate Park , which is extra convenient for a post-coffee walk (and puppy potty break).

Nourish Cafe

Next time you get hungry while you and your puppy are strutting down the street on a morning walk, stop by Nourish Cafe. The vegan cafe has locations in the Richmond and Nob Hill, both of which have a couple of small-ish tables out on the sidewalk. Grab an acai bowl or a smoothie and enjoy it while you contemplate putting the dog on a plant-based diet, too.

Palm House

If spending your evening surrounded by copious amounts of boozy slushies and a variety of dogs seems like fun, Palm House is the place for you. The Cow Hollow spot will give your dog water bowls and maybe even a lei, which will automatically make them the most popular and well-dressed four-legged creature on Union Street.

Rose's Cafe

Rose’s Cafe in Cow Hollow has tons of outdoor seating and a breakfast pizza with lox that makes it 75% easier for us to get out of bed in the morning. So it’s a great place to come by on a weekday morning while you kick back with some coffee and pretend your to-do list doesn’t exist.

Brass Tacks

Since there’s no food at this Hayes Valley bar, they allow dogs to hang out at the bar and in the sofa-filled area in the back. The cocktails are great, but you’re here for the great selection of beers, and to watch whatever game is on the TVs with your best non-human friend.

Gott’s Roadside

Lots of the restaurants at the Ferry Building have outdoor seating, but Gott’s has the most spacious patio of them all. Sit at one of their picnic benches and let your dog have a good time scaring off the vicious seagulls that are waiting for your garlic fries to drop. Don’t forget to cap things off with some of their thick soft serve , too.
