The Professional Women's Hockey League announced on Monday the official names and logos for its inaugural six franchises ahead of the start of the league’s second season.

The PWHL’s Boston franchise will be called the “Boston Fleet,” with a logo that resembles a sideways anchor. Boston will keep the primary color of deep green with a seafoam green secondary color.

Speculation had been that Boston’s franchise would be called the “Wicked” based on an early trademark submission by the league before the inaugural season. However, none of the six originally trademarked team names were used.

“Over the course of the last nine months we went through hundreds upon hundreds upon hundreds of names and those were six of them that were in the cue that just didn't make the final cut,” PWHL Senior Vice President of Business Operations Amy Sheer said Monday.

“The other ones didn't stick and that’s why we’re the Boston Fleet and we have this color scheme and it’s going to be incredible,” Boston captain Hilary Knight said.

Players like Knight and Kendall Coyne-Schofield said they were not involved in the naming process and weren’t aware of the final names until just before the league announced them on Monday.

“The league kept this under wraps pretty well,” Knight said. “It's funny, when all the teasers were getting released, we were really trying to figure out what's the name going to be for each city.”

The league will have a separate jersey launch which will be in late October or early November, according to Sheer.

    Why the Boston Fleet?

League officials said that they gathered hundreds of names, including taking note of fan suggestions on social media and in the YouTube chats on live streams of games.

The PWHL’s process for creating the names and logos was led by PWHL Vice President of Brand and Marketing, Kanan Bhatt-Shah, a Boston University graduate, who explained why the name ‘Fleet’ was selected for Boston:

“In terms of the name ‘Fleet,’ just the strong maritime history and heritage there… and I think we really wanted to combine that with the spirit of the people, the spirit of Bostonians and New England, this resilience, this unity, this togetherness.”

Using PHF names, like the Boston Pride, was not an option as the PWHL set out to create six new names to be part of their own history.

When asked about her team’s new name and logo, Knight said, “It really just embodies that relentless passionate attitude of what it means to be a part of that city and represent that city on the professional level.”

Here is the PWHL statement on why it chose Boston’s name:

Boston Fleet – ‘Fleet’ pays homage to Boston’s collective spirit and rich maritime history, representing the city’s unified strength and resilience. The logo combines the iconic letter ‘B’ in the team’s primary deep green color with an anchor, symbolizing Boston's identity and nautical heritage. The forward-leaning shape communicates momentum, reflecting the city's sporting legacy and the team's advancement on the ice.

How do the players like the name?

In Monday’s post-announcement press conference, Knight spoke highly of her team's new name and logo.

“It's really cool to be able to have something that you feel embodies the city to this extent. The color scheme is so unique as well and it’s definitely going to set us apart, which is awesome,” Knight said.

I cannot wait to play in front of our fanbase because it’s truly special when you're in our arena and you’re just going to see this sea of green, different types of green in different hues and it’s going to be truly something special.”

How do I get Boston Fleet merch?

The PWHL put out its first round of merch with the new team names Monday morning , with about 20 new Boston Fleet products that mostly include t-shirts, hoodies and jackets.

However, buying a jersey could still be a ways off.

The league has yet to unveil the official jerseys for each team and say they are in the process of manufacturing them for the players.

“Our jerseys are still in production, so we thought the time to reveal them would be a little bit later when we actually have our jerseys in hand,” Sheer said.

“When we launch what the jerseys look like you will immediately be able to buy replica jerseys and you will be able to buy them with player names on them as well. I don't believe this year we are going to have authentic jerseys for sale given the compressed timeline. I’m happy that the players will have jerseys to wear for the games. I think in year three we'll probably start to see where we come out with an authentics program.”

The Boston Fleet will continue to play their home games at the Tsongas Center in Lowell this upcoming season, with Sheer also noting that they're "working on some other options that quite honestly we’re just not willing to address right now."
