‘The Perfect Couple’s Ishaan Khatter Didn’t Know How Steamy His Shower Scene Would Be: “I Had No Idea”

Netflix ‘s The Perfect Couple is a murder mystery, a sexy summer escape, and, at times, a comedy. However, the story also contains the undercurrents of one steamy star-crossed romance. Even though the show is ostensibly about a murder that derails the marriage of Benji Winbury ( Billy Howle ) and Amelia Sacks ( Eve Hewson ), there’s another reason why this couple was doomed to never live happily ever after. His name is Shooter Dival ( Ishaan Khatter ).

In The Perfect Couple Episode 4 “Someone Could Get Hurt,” we learn that there’s long been something brewing between middle class zoologist Amelia Sacks and her wealthy boyfriend’s even wealthier best friend and Best Man, Shooter Dival. The show takes us back to when the pair were forced to (gasp) share a private plane and a few hours alone together on Nantucket Island. Not only is the chemistry between them easy and electric, but Shooter reveals that he remembers seeing Amelia years before.

Apparently Shooter and Amelia were both once on the same crowded B train stuck on the bridge between Brooklyn and Manhattan during the Fourth of July fireworks. A woman’s necklace broke, casting dozens of plastic beads all over the train car floor. Shooter vividly remembers that only he and a pretty brunette in a black band tee helped the stranger out. (Which is why we see Shooter has Amelia in his phone as “B Train.”) Before Shooter can kiss the girl he’s been taken with for four years, Benji arrives to kill the mood.

‘The Perfect Couple’ Ending Explained: Who Was the Killer?

The unspoken flirtation between Shooter and Amelia comes to a head in the same episode where we get this romantic backstory. Amelia thinks Benji is using his family’s outdoor shower and announces that she’s joining him. However, she comes face to face with a very naked — and very buff — Shooter, instead. It’s a split second shot that’s so steamy that Netflix used it to promote the show in the official trailer.

When Decider spoke with Khatter last week, we asked him he was given warning that Shooter’s shower scene would be used to sell The Perfect Couple ‘s sexy vibes.

“Well, I certainly wasn’t, for one,” he said, sharing a chuckle with co-star Meghann Fahy, before revealing he didn’t know what the scene was going to be, period, let alone as part of the Netflix marketing team.

“When we were filming the series, I think very few actors had the privilege to go and look at the monitor and I don’t think any of us wanted to, either. So, I had no idea what that shot was going to turn out like,” he said. “But, you know, it’s [director and executive producer] Susanne [Bier]’s party, and we’re all here for it.”

After this sexually charged moment, Amelia goes to Shooter to admit that maybe in another life, they could have been something, but that she’s committed to marrying Benji. Shooter finally makes his move and they kiss…only for Benji to walk in on their one passionate embrace.

Khatter explained that he thought the shower scene set up this explosive moment.

“I think we’ve kind of walked a fine balance with the relationship and my character, at large. There is a sort of element of mystery to Shooter. I think it’s been sort of devised that way so that it pops off in the right moments, in the right way. It was really fun to be able to, to strike that chord,” he said before heaping praise on his scene partner.

“I think working with Eve was also one of the good pleasures of being on this project. She’s incredible,” Khatter said. “It was easy to create chemistry with her because, you know, she’s just that good an actor.”

While we know from the end of The Perfect Couple that Benji and Amelia amicably break up, it’s left unclear if Shooter is still attempting to shoot his shot with his beloved “B Train.”

“What do you think?” Khatter cheekily retorted when Decider asked if Shooter’s in touch with Amelia six months later.

“I hope he’s texting her,” Decider replied.

“Well, yeah, I think that’s one of the questions that the show leaves you with,” he said. “It does end on kind of a bittersweet note.”

“But yeah, I mean, I would be down for it if there’s a Season 2…”

The Perfect Couple was intended to be only a limited series, but maybe we can get Shooter and B Train back in action working with Greer on another murder case?
