MERIDIAN, Idaho — The Elmore County Sheriff’s Office is leading an investigation into a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred near Mountain Home in the early hours of September 9, 2024. Idaho State Police (ISP) troopers were involved in the incident after a high-speed pursuit on I-84.

Shortly after midnight, a trooper observed a speeding Honda Accord near milepost 172 in Jerome County. The driver failed to stop, prompting a pursuit. Despite multiple attempts to stop the vehicle using spike strips, the chase continued until the Honda was halted at milepost 98.

During the attempted arrest, shots were fired, striking the male driver. Emergency medical aid was provided, but the driver succumbed to his injuries at the scene. There were no other reported injuries.

The westbound lanes of I-84 near milepost 98 are closed for the investigation, which is expected to last several hours. The Elmore County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause of death and release the driver’s identity after proper notification.
