Aaron Rodgers opened up about his Achilles injury to another former NFL quarterback in Alex Smith during a recent interview , but ahead of the New York Jets' season opener on Monday night against the San Francisco 49ers, we have sudden news that a Netflix docuseries is on the way. Appropriately titled, Aaron Rodgers: Enigma
, the streaming giant couldn't have synced this up better than to premiere the first footage before Rodgers takes the field as a Jet in Week 1 for the second time. The last time he did was last season, when a blown-out Achilles cut his 2023 campaign short only four plays in. The clip from Enigma shows Rodgers on a plane discussing ball, and how he sees the game. Basically, Rodgers takes into account his own estimation of how likely it is the receiver he's targeting will catch the ball. That leads him to perhaps stray away from the expected read on a play and can generate explosive plays when opponents least expect it. For instance, he perceived a jump ball to James Jones during his Packers heyday as a 20% shot to be completed to an average receiver, but it was more of a 50% chance when Jones was on the receiving end. https://twitter.com/netflix/status/1833188677767286939 Then we get into some conversation about the Achilles injury, and how Rodgers feels grateful for the love and support of so many around him as he was going through his recovery. The man with Rodgers on the plane looks to be some sort of medical consultant. He talks about how elite athletes like Tom Brady, Kobe Bryant and others have an almost superhuman belief in themselves that transcends what they accomplish on the field. He was speaking in terms of how all-time greats like them and Rodgers might fall into the trap of believing they're "built different" and can recover at a rate faster than almost anyone in history. Rodgers publicly hinted at this to the media last year. To sort of paraphrase, he said he'd laugh in the face of typical recovery timelines from a torn Achilles, and really, he returned to practice late in the season thanks to a cutting-edge SpeedBridge procedure that trims months off the typical rehab of an Achilles tear. Granted, golf is a far less contact-heavy sport, but 66-year-old
Bernhard Langer came back after only two months to play in a tournament. Four months out, Langer was shooting 63 in competition. Totally mind-blowing. Anyway, Netflix is kind of on a roll with NFL content. The Quarterback and Receiver series. Now this unprecedented inside glimpse into the humanoid riddle that is Aaron Rodgers, right around the same time a deep-dive biography has released. I'd imagine most NFL fans will be seated on their couches to check Enigma out on December 17.
