Cardinals offensive additions for 2025 likely to come via trade

The 2024 season has been yet another disappointing one for the St. Louis Cardinals, who are coming off of a 71-91 finish in 2023.

Though they sit over the .500 mark with 19 games to play, their chances of reaching the postseason are quite slim, largely because of the struggles of their offense.

As the offseason approaches, the Cardinals will need to add a bat or two to their mix. According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch , this addition is likely to come via trade rather than free agency.

"The bat it sure seems like they need to add for 2025 is more likely to come via trade. That's the initial look at the market," Goold said in his weekly Cardinals chat. "It could change. But trade seems like the best route to explore."

There will be plenty of bats available in free agency this winter such as J.D. Martinez, Justin Turner, and Juan Soto. However, there are plenty that will be available on the trade market as well.

Sluggers such as Yandy Diaz, Taylor Ward, or Brent Rooker could be made available, and the Cardinals could search there for some help on the offensive side.

More than likely, a right-handed bat is needed to balance out the left-handed heavy Cardinals lineup, so it will be interesting to see what they do as they look for ways to improve their offense.

The offense has been one of the key culprits in the team's second-half decline, and that is something that will need to be fixed if they want to compete for a spot in the postseason in 2025.
