Nickelodeon's "The Smurfs" Set For 3rd Season And Upcoming Film

They're blue, stand three inches tall, and reside in mushroom houses. They're the Smurfs, who have been around for decades and are beloved by many. Since the beginning, fans have enjoyed watching the magical misadventures of these blue creatures, including their contentions with foes like the vile wizard Gargamel and his cat Azrael. The Smurfs have been in movies, comics, and cartoons, with more tales on the horizon.

    The Smurfs' Rise to Fame

Pierre Culliford, better known by his pen name Peyo, created the Smurfs. At the time of their creation, he was working for the Belgian magazine Le Journal de Spirou. His inspiration for the little blue beings came when observing his daughter playing with a wooden dwarf figurine. The Smurfs debuted in 1947 as supporting characters in the Johan and Peewit comic series; they quickly gained popularity and overshadowed the series' two main characters. They got their first solo adventure, The Flute with Six Holes, in 1958.

The Smurfs eventually became so popular that they transitioned from comics to cartoons. They premiered in a Belgian animated movie, The Smurfs and the Magic Flute, in 1976, which introduced the small blue creatures to a broader audience. This exposure soon led to the iconic Hanna-Barbera cartoon show in 1981. The Smurfs soon thereafter achieved global fame and appeared in books, merchandise, and theme parks. As the years passed, the blue beings remained popular with audiences old and new.

    The Smurfs in Modern Television

In 2021, the Smurfs returned to television in a new Nickelodeon animated series, The Smurfs. The show features iconic characters such as Papa Smurf, Hefty Smurf, and Brainy Smurf, as well as their longtime antagonists Gargamel and Azrael. Joining the well-known characters are the Smurf Girls from the 2017 movie Smurfs: The Lost Village. Just like in the 80s cartoon, the Smurfs get into many fun mishaps.

The Smurfs is produced by Peyo Productions and Dupuis Audiovisuel and co-produced by KiKa, Ketnet, and RTBF with participation from TF1. This series is the first Smurfs cartoon show since the Hanna-Barbera series. The computer animation used for it is similar to that in Smurfs: The Lost Village; however, there is no connection between the series and the movie.

    More Smurfing Fun To Come

The third season of The Smurfs premiered on Nickelodeon last week. This season introduces new characters, including Voltaire, a dragon from the comics and classic show. The renewed roster also includes two new Smurf Girls, Smurffirefly and Smurfbubble. The villain lineup grows with the introduction of Gargamel's niece and nephew, young evil-doers who periodically appear to help their uncle capture the Smurfs.

Along with the third season of The Smurfs, a new movie is in the works. Chris Miller will be the director and Matt Landon will be co-director. The movie's producers will be Ryan Harris, Laurence "Jay" Brown, Tryan "Ty-Ty" Smith, and Rihanna, who will also play the role of Smurfette. The musical film will premiere on February 14, 2025.
