The NFL is only one week into its season, and fans are already ripping apart their favorite teams, trash talking teams that lost, calling for quarterbacks to get benched, and suggesting that head coaches are on the hot seat. So what does all of that mean? Football is back. Some NFL teams got off to a great start yesterday, while others disappointed their fan bases with abysmal showings to kick off the season.
Luke Combs completely eviscerated his favorite team , the Carolina Panthers, after they lost to the New Orleans Saints 47 to 10. And many fans in Cleveland were having a similar response to how their Cleveland Browns team competed against the Dallas Cowboys. Most of the Browns' struggles fell on the shoulders of Deshaun Watson, who signed a five-year, $230 million contract back in 2022. That's quickly becoming one of the worst signings in all of the NFL, considering that's all guaranteed money, thus Cleveland is virtually stuck with Watson - unless they want to take a huge dead cap hit. Watson was supposed to be the answer to Cleveland's historic quarterback woes...just like all of the QB's that came before him were supposed to be the savior, but eventually either fizzled out or were shipped elsewhere. Of course, one former Browns quarterback has had a resurgence since he left Cleveland, and all of the Browns fans
literally hate to see it. Baker Mayfield, who was the Browns quarterback until requesting a trade after the team signed Watson in 2022, has seemed to have found his footing quite nicely with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After a 9-8 regular season in 2023, the Bucs ended up winning the NFC South and scoring a Wild Card round win against the Philadelphia Eagles before falling to the Detroit Lions in the Divisional Round. And yesterday, Baker was on fire during the season opener against the Washington Commanders, leading the team to a 37-20 win while throwing 4 touchdowns and going 24-30 for 289 yards. Well obviously Browns fans aren't thrilled to see Baker playing so well for another team. "Dave in Macedonia" called into the
The Ken Carman Show with Anthony Lima , a program on 92.3 The Fan in Cleveland, and he made sure to bring up how bad Deshaun was against the Cowboys. His opening line went like this:
"Good morning boys. Here's two numbers. You'll figure them out. 42.9 (and) 144." Show host Ken Carman wasn't following, and asked for clarification about the numbers that "Dave in Macedonia" provided:
"What is all this?" And the caller was more than happy to clarify:
"Watson's quarterback rating (and) Mayfield's quarterback rating." Hearing that Deshaun Watson's QBR was 100 less than Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB (and former Brown) Baker Mayfield sent Carman over the edge, and it's pretty safe to say that the radio host lost his mind responding to what was apparently the first call of the day:
"Oh Christ. I can't do this for one more second. NO! THAT'S ENOUGH! The first call out of the box, we're gonna do this? The very first call out of the box, we're gonna do this? I know what his quarterback rating was. I know that he was good. Guys, I'm not doing it right out of the damn box. Can I have a little bit of time before we do this? He ain't coming home. He ain't coming back. Only to play us, that's it. He had a great day down there. Congratulations on all his success.
