Caitlin Clark's seven-word critique of her own game is absolutely spot on

Caitlin Clark has been an utter phenomenon since the Indiana Fever selected her with the first pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft. For all of her flair and dynamism, however, comes an unsightly underbelly.

Clark leads the league in turnovers per gam e by a tremendous margin with 5.7 a game. The gap between her and second place on the list (Alyssa Thomas of the Connecticut Sun ) is the same as the gap between second and the tie for 21st.

Ahead of her game against the Minnesota Lynx , Clark admitted on the court she's “definitely a high-risk, high-reward person."

Cark proceeded to turn the ball seven times as the Fever fell 99-88, snapping a five-game winning streak.

The Fever rebounded on Sunday, overcoming a 16-point deficit to rally past the Atlanta Dream 104-100 in overtime. Clark had a strong game, scoring 26 points on 7/17 shooting. She drained four three-pointers, grabbed five rebounds, and dished out 12 assists.

However, Clark turned the ball over a staggering nine times. That's not her most on the season -- she lost the ball 10 times in her WNBA debut against the Connecticut Sun in May .

At the same time, she's leading the WNBA in assists by a comfortable margin. Her 8.5 assists per game are 0.8 more than second place (Alyssa Thomas again).

“I always said I’m a really creative person but I’m creative on the basketball floor, that’s about the only time you see it," Clark said last week. "I like to have fun, make exciting plays. I think at times I’m definitely a high-risk, high-reward person."

"It’s not something you’re playing out as you’re dribbling up the court, it kind of just happens naturally as it’s flowing. You’re trying to use your eyes to mess with the defender and what they’re thinking.…. I think I’m definitely creative on the basketball floor and I always try to try some new things."

The last time the Fever played the Lynx, Clark uncorked a three-quarter court pass to catch the Minnesota defense sleeping and find a wide-open Lexie Hull under the basket.

Still, Clark admitted there's a time and place for inventive passes. "I think it’s finding a balance of when it’s okay to do that during the games and when not."

What's arguably the most important stat for Clark and the Fever? Their win total -- Indiana has already won 19 games, their most since 2015.

Clark and company will look to continue climbing up the standings when they face they host the two-time reigning WNBA champion Los Vegas Aces on Wednesday.
