James Earl Jones has died at 93

James Earl Jones, EGOT winner and the voice behind the Darth Vader mask, died at his home in Dutchess County, New York, at 93. One of Jones’ representatives from Independent Artist Group confirmed the news to Deadline .

Jones was an EGOT recipient, meaning he won at least one Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony award during his career. Jones’ Oscar came from a Lifetime Achievement award in 2011, while he earned his Golden Globe in 1970 for Most Promising Newcomer in Great White Hope. He received a nomination for Best Actor at the Oscard for the same role and a second Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Drama.

Jones won three Emmy Awards – his first in 1991 for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries, for Heat Wave – two Tony Awards for Best Actor in Great White Hope and Fences and a third Tony given as a Lifetime Achievement award in 2017. Jones also won a Grammy in the Best Spoken Word category for his work on Great American Documents.

That’s in addition to a slew of nominations and over a dozen other awards for his work on the stage and screen.

Jones might be better known in pop culture for voicing Darth Vader in several Star Wars films and series or Mufasa in The Lion King , but his career spanned decades and saw him reach heights few actors manage. Jones’ first major role came in 1964’s Dr Strangelove as Lt Lothar Zogg, but his breakout moment happened in 1970’s The Great White Hope for his portrayal as Jack Jefferson. From then on, Jones appeared in dozens of projects, from The Sandlot and L.A. Law, to The Hunt for Red October, Garfield and Friends, and even a cameo as himself in The Big Bang Theory.
