Two NYPD officers from Long Island worked side-by-side with their K-9s at ground zero searching for remains following the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11. NYPD K-9 officers Frank Vollaro, of Lindenhurst, and Pete Davis, of Greenlawn, arrived on scene just as the second twin tower collapsed, with their dogs. Vollaro and his K-9, Sampson, along with Davis and his K-9, Apollo, searched for eight months in dangerous conditions in the hopes of giving closure to families. Vollaro says the dogs were able to detect even the smallest fragments of DNA in the rubble, which allowed investigators to identity some of the nearly 3,000 people killed. The first responders and their K-9s are remembered on Long Island where two monuments in Lindenhurst and Farmingdale stand to pay tribute to their commitment. "
