You couldn’t ask for a better start to the 2024 NFL season if you’re a Minnesota Vikings fan. On Sunday, the team picked up a 28-6 win over the New York Giants behind new starting quarterback Sam Darnold.

Here are five massive takeaways from the impressive week one showing from the Vikings.

    5) Sam Darnold Looks Good

Sam Darnold was going to start this game, even if J.J. McCarthy remained healthy, but his performance on Sunday was promising. The former first-round draft pick completed 19-of-24 passes for 208 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. The INT was due to a great play by Dexter Lawrence, who got a hand on Darnold's arm. Overall, Vikings fans should be pleased with Darnold’s play as the team prepares to host the San Francisco 49ers next week.

    4) Jefferson, Addison, And Nailor Make For A Great WR Room

Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and Jalen Nailor are a great triple-threat at wide receiver for the Vikings. Jefferson opened the season with four catches, 59 yards, and a touchdown. Jordan Addison caught three passes for 35 yards before leaving the game with an ankle injury. Meanwhile, Jalen Nailor only had one catch, but it was a touchdown grab from 21 yards out. If all three players remain healthy, the Vikings could have one of the best wide receiver rooms this season.

    3) Will Reichard Is The Kicker Fans Have Waited For

Vikings fans have major trust issues when it comes to kickers, but rookie Will Reichard seems to be the real deal. Reichard didn’t get to attempt any field goals on Sunday afternoon, but he was a perfect four-for-four on point after attempts. Reichard had a great training camp, and that positive momentum has seemingly carried into the regular season.

    2) Jones Allows The Vikings To Run The Ball Again

Minnesota struggled to run the ball last season and quickly addressed that issue in the offseason by signing long-time Green Bay Packer Aaron Jones. The 29-year-old recorded 14 carries, gaining 94 yards, and found the end zone in the first quarter. It was refreshing to see the Vikings run the ball successfully, and with Jones in the lineup, they should be able to continue that throughout the year.

    1) The Defense Is Legit

The Vikings defense was arguably the biggest takeaway from the week one matchup. The Brian Flores-led unit allowed only 240 yards while also getting five sacks, 12 quarterback hits, and six tackles for loss. Andrew Van Ginkel made an incredible play in the third quarter, scoring on the pick-six. Harrison Smith also picked off Daniel Jones.
