Taking a walk down memory lane. Eight years ago today, the East Texas Southern rock band Whiskey Myers released their fourth studio album, Mud , via Wiggy Thump Records. The record, created with the legendary producer Dave Cobb, helped create this soulful and rip-roaring album. The record features four songs that would later appear in the hit Western TV show
Yellowstone, highlighting the band's iconic unapologetic rock and roll influences sound... a breakout moment for the band, no doubt. The thick guitar riffs and deep twangs that give the album's track an "outdoorsy" vibe encompass the lifestyle of Cody Cannon. The rather private frontman of the country rock group likes to spend his free time in the woods, and you feel that on tracks like "Deep Down In The South" and the title track, "Mud." When the album was released, Cannon told Lone Star Magazine why they chose "Mud" as the title track. "I think the swampy, dark, and mysterious feel of that song is something that’s always been very familiar to us. That feeling really spoke to us in that we all identify with the character of the song, also. That song sums up what the record is about."
This record is one of my favorites from the band, as many anthemic rockin' songs are found throughout the tracklist. As this is the second record they collaborated on with Dave Cobb, he knew the groove they wanted to achieve with this record's sound and made it come to life. "It really felt like we just picked up where we left off with 'Early Morning Shakes.' We recorded that album quickly and when we got back into the studio with him, we kept that vibe going. But we as a band have grown since the last album, and he’s grown as a producer since then, too, so his techniques on how to get a particular sound has matured a bit, which helped this record come out so well." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgT5wcrCl4w Since
Mud, Whiskey Myers continues to be a groundbreaking Southern rock band, continually evolving their sound with their self-titled album, followed by their latest record, Tornillo. Nearly a decade later, the sounds of Mud sound just as good as they did on release day in 2016. Fire up some of our favorites in honor of the record's birthday. "Deep Down In The South" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZtapxdEjHo "Stone" Arguably the greatest song they've ever released... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_AcPnI7oRss&pp=ygUFc3RvbmU%3D "Trailer We Call Home" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lN3QIORaDag
