Detroit Lions running back made franchise history after his game-winning run into the end zone to seal a 26-20 victory over the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday night.

His teammate, linebacker Alex Anzalone, also became the first Lions player to ever record at least 10 tackles and three tackles for loss in a season opener.

Montgomery and the Lions' offensive line bullied their way down the field on eight plays and 70 yards, finishing it off with a Montgomery goal line touchdown.

The score put Montgomery in the Lions history books, as he became the first player to score a rushing touchdown in overtime to win the game.

It's surely a stat that makes one scratch their head and say aloud, "Huh?"

Considering the Lions' mostly futile history and the fact overtime rules used to be first team that scores wins, it's believable.

Montgomery was the nucleus of the Lions' offensive attack in overtime, as he carried the ball five times for 45 yards on the final drive alone. He finished with 17 carries for 91 yards and a touchdown.

Montgomery and the Lions will next welcome quarterback Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Bay Buccaneers to Detroit on Sunday for a Week 2 NFC matchup.
