Teams have consistently dropped eight players into coverage and limited man-to-man looks against Josh Heupel's offense, and the Vols believe they finally have the personnel they need to counter it. Tennessee has wanted to mix in 12 personnel from the beginning, but scholarship limitations and a lack of depth made that tough to do too often until now. It's another club for the bag, and it's one that <a href="https://247sports.com/Player/nico-iamaleava-46101236/">Nico Iamaleava</a> and Co. used to give NC State's 3-3-5 stack defense all sorts of issues. The Vols used more in-possession substitutions than usual, which combined with the lopsided score made them play much slower than usual, but there was much more good than bad offensively in that game.Tennessee's defense was even better than Tennessee's offense, though, and the Vols' stout, stacked defensive line again led the way. The number of big, athletic players Tennessee can rotate up front continues to cause opponents all sorts of issues, and the Pack had no time or space to do much damage in Charlotte. The Vols also continued using star junior edge <a href="https://247sports.com/Player/james-pearce-jr-46114817/">James Pearce Jr.</a> in all sorts of ways, including as bait to lure NC State away from the places Tennessee blitzed. Nothing is ever perfect, but Tennessee's defensive performance against the Wolfpack was a masterclass. It was even more dominant than the final score indicated.
