Browns just signed a former Super Bowl champion and the juice may not be worth the squeeze

As if it was not already a very interesting day for the Cleveland Browns , they decided to turn it up a notch.

On the same day that tight end David Njoku was lost for the time being with an injury , the Browns added another weapon to their offensive gameplan.

Cleveland is set to sign former Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney, who won the last two Super Bowls with KC, according to Jordan Schultz. For the time being Toney is expected to be on the practice squad but could eventually make his way to the active roster.

Since being a first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft by the New York Giants, Toney has not been able to put it all together to become the player that some thought he could be. Toney’s best season came as a rookie with the Giants when he had 420 receiving yards on 39 catches. Since then, Toney has not crossed 30 catches or 200 yards in a season.

In 2023, Toney caught 27 passes for 169 yards. A player who is most dangerous after the catch, but his inability to securely catch the ball and stay healthy have been his two biggest downfalls. Toney’s ability to be a return man may be his brightest spot.

“Toney has all the talent in the world. He would still be a Chief if he weren't reliably unreliable as a football player. You could count on Toney to do two things during his time in Kansas City, and that's to drop a pass or be sidelined by an injury. Sure, Toney made the occasional game-changing play. However, it was so infrequent that he simply could no longer be considered an asset to this particular Chiefs team, which is loaded with WR talent. The Chiefs have been the NFL's best team with dead cap space in recent years and they wanted Toney off their team so badly that they were willing to eat $2.53M in dead money." — Charles Goldman, A to Z Sports Kansas City

It is a very low risk for the Browns that they are not a stranger to making. In the past, Cleveland has taken chances on big names that haven’t quite panned out just to see if they can change the trajectory. With what Toney has shown us in his career, there is no reason to believe that will change.

Still just 25 years old and a speedy weapon, it is not hard to see why the Browns were interested in Toney. This is the kind of move where you have no expectations and just wait to see what happens.

If the Browns decide to move Toney to the active roster, they will have to part ways with someone else. The Browns host the Chiefs in Week 15 and something to monitor is whether or not Toney will be with the team at that point .
