Jason Baldoni, the director, and his production company, Wayfarer Studios, acquired the cinematic rights to ‘It Ends With Us’ in 2019. Originally, the movie began filming in May of 2023, but shortly after it was postponed due to the writer’s strike. The postponement of filming delayed the initial release date. Filming resumed at the beginning of 2024 and was set to be released in June. However, it was further delayed and officially released in theaters on August 9th, 2024.
‘It Ends With Us’ was filmed in New Jersey without any sets, such as backdrops or green screens. For Baldoni, this created a more authentic film and did not detract from the story. The casting for the movie took place at the beginning of 2023. Blake Lively was cast as Lily Bloom, the protagonist. Baldoni was also cast as Lily’s romantic interest, Ryle Kincaid. Their relationship was disrupted early on by Lily’s childhood sweetheart, Atlas Corrigan, played by Brandon Skenar.
The Message Behind ‘It Ends With Us’
‘It Ends With Us’ centers around domestic violence and the difficulties people face in those situations. Lily Bloom was raised in an abusive household. She witnessed her mother’s abuse at the hands of her father on multiple occasions. The abuse varied between physical, mental, and sexual. Lily’s marriage to Ryle resulted in similar abuse. Ultimately, she chose to end the generational cycle and leave Ryle. She did it for their daughter, so she wouldn’t have to grow up the way she did.
Some say the movie does not do a good job of expressing the message the book intends. The major controversy surrounding the film is how it has been marketed. If you did not read the book, you would not know that it focuses on domestic violence within intimate relationships. Many scenes in the movie that should be seen as red flags are depicted as romantic. At times, the movie glorifies Lily’s situation. However, it does show the abusive situations between Lily and Ryle through Lily’s point of view. It’s not until the end that she realizes she has been making the same excuses as her mother. Once she comes to that realization, it shows the true scenes of abuse.

As of now, there are no reports of the sequel being turned into a movie.
