Colorado Buffaloes’ QB Shedeur Sanders is not a leader

I’m not going to knock Shedeur Sanders for going to the locker room early with two minutes left on the clock Saturday evening in Lincoln, Nebraska. Between all of the hits he took, as well as the possibility of the Nebraska fans rushing the field, it was the smartest call Colorado made all night long.

I will knock him for his lack of leadership. Which was evident in his post-game press conference when he threw his entire offensive line under the bus. Shedeur asked, “I mean, how many times did Raiola get touched? How many times did Raiola get touched?” This is nothing new, as a NFL source stated, “Shedeur is no leader, quite the opposite. I wouldn’t touch him in the draft next year.”

Shedeur is just one of the issues that are plaguing Colorado. According to a parent of a current player, “When Shedeur shows up late for team meetings, Deion holds the meeting until he gets there. When other players do it he benches them.” What kind of example is that to set for your team?

Along with his brother Shilo, Shedeur seems to only be making things worse in Boulder. According to a source close to the program, “They create a hostile, corrosive atmosphere for the team, all aided by the head coach. It’s the least organized program I’ve ever seen. They don’t develop players. They certainly don’t develop men. It’s all a facade. He’s (Deion) a fugazi.”

Every week this Colorado team seems undisciplined, unprepared, and unimpressive. That is no way to build a competitive team, much less a winner year after year. No matter what happens on the field if there is no accountability from the top, then what you saw on Saturday will happen on a regular basis.

If Shedeur is one of the best quarterbacks in college football, he should embrace criticism, and pledge to improve both his leadership on the field and his presence on the sidelines. But so far, Sanders has chosen to push the blame away, dodging accountability. There is a saying that my grandmother always used that is appropriate for this instance. She would say, “No one likes to get confronted in their eyes.” It’s tough to deal with challenges if you aren’t ready to confront them directly.
