On Monday, Bon Appétit recognized three California restaurants among the 20 best new eateries in the U.S. for 2024. The honorees include two Bay Area spots — Four Kings in San Francisco and Popoca in Oakland — and one Los Angeles restaurant, Azizam.

Four Kings, located at 710 Commercial St. in San Francisco’s Chinatown, is a Cantonese-inspired eatery with Japanese izakaya influences. Helmed by chefs Franky Ho and Mike Long, both alumni of the renowned Mister Jiu’s, Four Kings focuses on small, shareable plates that blend nostalgia with modern flair.

Oakland’s Popoca, at 906 Washington St., is a modern Salvadoran restaurant led by chef Anthony Salguero. Opened in August 2023, Popoca is known for its wood-fired pupusas and the distinctive smoky flavors imparted by its outdoor hearth.

In Los Angeles, Azizam brings a fresh take on Persian cuisine. Run by Cody Ma and Misha Sesar, the restaurant offers seasonal dishes that go beyond traditional grilled meats. Standout items include the kofteh tabrizi, a massive beef and rice meatball, and the rejuvenating yogurt dip, maast o mousir. Diners are also encouraged to savor the rich saffron rice pudding.
