Jordan Mason’s Admission About Christian McCaffrey Sparks Serious 49ers Criticism

San Francisco 49ers running back Jordan Mason had ample time to mentally gear up for his first start, stepping in for Christian McCaffrey.

McCaffrey was a surprise scratch for Monday Night Football against the Jets. The All-Pro running back is dealing with calf/Achilles injuries but had expressed confidence that he'd play against the Jets.

However, the 49ers announced just hours before kickoff that McCaffrey would not play in their primetime clash with New York, leaving many fantasy owners scrambling. Mason said in his postgame interview that he knew on Friday that he would be starting.

"When did I find out? Maybe Friday night. You know, something like that," Mason told ESPN's Lisa Salters in his postgame interview.

Mason's admission ignited quite a response on social media.

"Christian McCaffrey fantasy owners hearing Jordan Mason tell Lisa Slaters that he knew he would be starting tonight…on Friday," Rich Eisen wrote on X, along with a GIF of Matthew McConaughey crying.

Others thought that the 49ers could potentially be in trouble following Mason's admission.

"Jordan Mason spoke a little more than Shanahan and the NFL would’ve liked there," a fan said . "The fact he knew Friday night he was the starter and we were told CMC was expected to start until 2 hours before kickoff is wild."

"49ers need to be investigated NFL," another added . "Jordan Mason just admitted he knew he was starting Friday night while they were telling others that McCaffery was playing."

In his postgame press conference, San Francisco skipper Kyle Shanahan disputed Mason's claim.

"I never told Jordan he was going to start," Shanahan told reporters. "Told him he'd have to be ready a bunch. I knew he would have to play a lot and it wouldn't be like usual."

It all worked out for the 49ers, who got 147 yards and a touchdown out of Mason during a dominant 32-19 victory. Mason went undrafted in 2022 and entered Monday's matchup with just 83 career carries.
