Huge cult 80s blockbuster ‘set for sequel with original cast 40 years later’

The Goonies never say die and they might be saying it again in a potential sequel.

The cult classic is reportedly getting a sequel with the original cast set to return. The Goonies follow a group of kids known as the self-proclaimed Goonies from the "Goon Docks" neighborhood of Astoria, Oregon. They go on an adventure when they discover an old treasure map that also also leads to danger as there is a family of criminals who are eyeing the treasure for themselves.

According to The Sun , a source told the outlet that another film is in the works for the 1985 adventure-comedy. They stated plans to discuss the ideas for the "follow-up" will happen next summer when the film turns forty. There's a possible 2026 or 2027 release date.

"The Goonies reboot has been talked about for a long time but it’s finally been given the green light to go ahead," The insider said.

"The original is so culturally significant, Warner Bros’ know they have to get it totally right. It’s likely major stars will come back but the possibilities of where to take the sequel are endless. The team who are going to be starting work on the project are so excited," they added.

The insider also said that the market for youth adventure is on fire which the team want to "capitalize" on and they are excited to bring the film to a "whole new audience".

The Goonies was directed and co-produced by the late Richard Donner and written by Chris Columbus based on the imaginative mind of Steven Spielberg (who also produced the film). The film features Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman, Kerri Green, Martha Plimpton, and Ke Huy Quan, with supporting roles by the late John Matuszak, Anne Ramsey, Robert Davi, Joe Pantoliano and Mary Ellen Trainor.

The idea of a sequel has been around for years and Chris disclosed in an interview with Empire in 2021 that the late filmmaker Richard had spoken him about a second film. He recalled that Richard had called him and said they would get on his boat, "smoke pot for three days" and think up an idea for Goonies 2. The screenwriter shared that he told Richard lets do a couple of drinks instead since he doesn't smoke but it never ended up happening which is something he regrets.

In 2020, Spielberg talked about a potential sequel and why it hasn't taken off over a cast reunion Zoom call for Josh Gad’s Reunited Apart series . He said that him, Chris, Richard and Lauren Shuler Donner "have had a lot conversations about it."

“Every couple of years we come up with an idea but then it doesn’t hold water." Spielberg said. “The problem is the bar that all of you raised on this genre, I don’t think we’ve really successfully been able to find an idea that is better than The Goonies that we all made in the eighties.”

As of right now, the sequel has not officially been confirm but that hasn't stopped fans from sharing their mixed feeling online. Some fans are excited and others are dreading a follow-up. One fan on X formerly Twitter wrote: "Absolutely loved the Goonies. There were so many great movies in the 80s. I'm definitely here for it, too. Hey, you guys." Another said: " T he Goonies doesn't need a sequel. I seriously doubt that this will go well."
