I drove the 9,000lbs Hummer EV SUV – the battery weighs the same as a Toyota Corolla but it has a surprising feel

WEIGHING in at 9,063lbs the Hummer EV SUV is the heaviest car in the world – but the mammoth motor is shockingly light on its feet.

With its 2,900lbs-battery weighing the same as a Toyota Corolla, the entire vehicle packs the same punch as an elephant.

The interior was incredibly tasteful, and it had the only “normal” shifter out of all the modern cars I tested

But what it loses in tact, it makes up for in performance, and a militaristic feature made this one of the easiest cars to drive.

I’m here in Ridgefield, Washington for the Drive Revolution Event voting between over a dozen cars for the best EV , PHEV, ICE, and best Performance car of 2024

If I could vote for a car that surprised me the most, it would be the 2024 GMC Hummer EV 3X SUV.

The first thing that shocked me – along with the $117,435 price tag – was the size.

The Hummer, like its gas-powered and thirsty predecessors, made me feel like the speck on the planet that I am.

Once I climbed into it and caught my breath, I was shocked by how small the interior made me feel.

Out of all the cars I drove at the event, the Hummer had the most “normal” feeling shifter of the bunch, and the digital screens for the gauges and infotainment center were incredibly user-friendly, responsive, and not at all overstimulating.

This was the first EV I’d ever driven, and it felt like such a seamless transition from a gas-powered car to an EV, even with the one-pedal braking.

Despite its heft, the acceleration on the Hummer was insane.

If you’ve ever been on a roller coaster starting from a stop to what feels like going into hyperdrive, this perfectly emulated that feeling.

When I got behind the wheel the Hummer had a 92% charge and had about 300 miles available before it was zero.

So this thing that -quite literally- weighs nearly as much as an adult Asian elephant (the Hummer weighs 9.063 lbs, while an elephant can weigh up to 10,000 lbs), has more range than a Subaru Solterra.

The battery alone weighs over 2,900 lbs, making it around the same weight as a Toyota Corolla at 2,955 lbs.

In motion, the GMC was deceptively easy to drive, as the electronic steering was tight, the braking was incredibly responsive, and the acceleration never came with a noticeable delay.

The driver’s seat was a wonderful place to be, with incredibly comfortable seats, large windows to see out, gargantuan side mirrors, and a camera for a rearview mirror.

At full charge, the EV had almost 300 miles of range, making it more efficient than a Subaru Solterra

There’s no such thing as poor visibility with the Hummer.

That’s thanks in part to the car’s rear-wheel steering, which means all four wheels turn in tandem to deliver deadly accurate steering.

The ability to drive it with one-pedal steering made getting around roundabouts and navigating crowded parking lots a synch once I got used to it.

And the only time I noticed how remarkably high off the ground was when I tried to climb out of it.

2024 GMC Hummer EV SX SUV Specs

These are the specifications of the GMC Hummer as tested:

    • Price : $117,435
    • City MPG : 55
    • Highway MPG : 45
    • Combined MPG : 50
    • Electric Range : 298 on full charge
    • Horsepower : 830
    • Torque : 1,200 lbs
    • Curb weight : 9,063 lbs
    • Battery weight : 2,818 lbs

As far as how practical the Hummer is, there’s no application, except maybe the military, where the Hummer would be “useful.”

But it’s a really good thing that’s a fairly subjective term.

I wouldn’t ever add a GMC Hummer to my stable, as it’s too large for my life, but I would never turn down the chance to drive one, either.

So what happens to a Toyota Corolla that gets rear-ended by a Hummer? If you don't pay gas tax who pays for your share of rhe road damage this tank causes? Who cleans up the mess from the mining of the metals? Who puts it out when it catches fire? This woke bullshit has a very real cost to the rest of the world forces to live around it. The irony is its supposed to solve problems....
