Actor Orlando Bloom admitted that he felt like he "was gonna die" after dropping a dramatic 52 pounds ahead of his role for his new Boxing drama The Cut.

The 47-year-old Hollywood star revealed that he was faced with one of the greatest challenges of his career as he dropped a third of his body weight to get into character. And as Orlando pushed his body to the limit to achieve his final chiseled form, he's opened up about both the mental and physical toll that it took on him in the months prior.

In an interview with People , he said: "I basically tiered down the food over a three-month period until just before filming, [when] I was at my lightest. I dropped 52 pounds, and I was about 185 when I started," and added: "I dropped quite a lot of weight, and I was very mentally challenged as well."

He explained that he found himself "hangry" - a mix of angry and starving - more than a few times throughout the process as he was following a strict dieting regime that often just included tuna and cucumbers. Orlando's long-time partner pop singer Katy Perry even confessed that she was "freaked out" as she witness the dramatic process unfold.

Orlando said that there was one night after filming that he recalled: "I literally thought I was gonna die.” But he admitted that one thing that kept him sane and on-track was Katy's unwavering support through it all. He told the news outlet: "She was there throughout, with the kids and stuff. It's hard for your family."

The dedicated actor's intense transformation comes as he took on the role of an unnamed boxer in the psychological thriller The Cut directed by Sean Ellis. The film follows the story of a boxer seeking a championship title before his retirement and is urged by his coach to undergo a drastic weight cutting regimen before a fight. In the movie the athlete is so determined to win before retiring that he is willing to do anything even if it threatens his life.
