Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - The National Weather Service will will conduct storm surveys Tuesday on Grand Island and in Genesee County following reports of tornados, says NWS meteorologist Phillip Pandolfo.

"We did get reports of a funnel cloud reaching the ground and crossing the Niagara River into Grand Island yesterday afternoon," says Pandolfo.

Pandolfo says Western New York tends to have a northwest flow that increases wind shear and boosts the chances of a tornado forming, and Monday's storm met the ideal conditions for the formation of a twister.

There's already a lead for the NWS to go on. "There was a tornado warning, actually issued for Environment Canada for the other side of the border. We're not sure at this moment if there was a tornado that touched down on the Canadian side which then crossed the river into Grand Island," says Pandolfo.

Damage from storms was reported on Grand Island and in Genesee County.

If the tornados are confirmed, that will bring the number of tornados in NYS this season to 30, setting a new record.
