Authorities with the Minnesota BCA have identified the man who was wounded by Minneapolis police officers during an armed standoff in the south side over the weekend.

40-year-old Nathan Mellstrom Matz of Minneapolis was hit in the jaw and remains hospitalized in stable condition, and he's expected to survive.

The officer who shot Matz is identified as Sgt. Ben Bauer, who has been in law enforcement for 12 years and remains on standard administrative leave.

It was late Friday when the MPD was called to an apartment building at 4052 Minnehaha Avenue on reports of a man walking in the neighborhood with a shotgun.

At 4:30 a.m. Saturday, they were called back to the scene and the confrontation occurred.

Police say the Matz was the same man who was the subject of the Friday night call, and that he was armed with several weapons and wearing a flak jacket.

According to the report, Matz fired at police with an AK-47-style rifle.

The armed confrontation was inside a stairwell of the apartment building, which had been evacuated.
