Pittsburgh Penguins longtime captain and franchise legend Sidney Crosby remains without a contract extension entering the final year of his 12-season, $104.4 million deal with the Pens.

Crosby finally addressed media questions related to the lack of an extension on September 9 , and he is confident that he will sign a new contract with the team soon.

Speaking at the NHL North American Player Media Tour in Las Vegas on Monday, Crosby broke silence on the fact that he has not signed a new deal, even though he’s been eligible since July 1. Crosby quickly shut down any concerns.

"No, no," Crosby said about whether or not he will start the 2024-25 season without having signed an extension.

"I’m pretty optimistic it’s going to get done," Crosby said. "I don’t know what day specifically. It’s been really positive. Hasn’t been a real difficult process. I’m optimistic that something will get done."

Crosby, 37, is entering the final season of his contract carrying a very palatable $8.7 million salary cap hit. With this public announcement, however, it's crystal clear Crosby will remain in Pittsburgh and most probably retire as a Penguin.

The franchise will try to keep applying touches to an aging roster full of veterans including Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang, and recently-acquired Erik Karlsson. The team has missed the playoffs for the past two seasons, falling short by just a few points in both 2022–23 and 2023–24.

Despite Pittsburgh’s struggles and his age, Crosby remains a top performer in the NHL. He's coming off a 42-goal, 94-point campaign that placed him 12th in the league's historic scoring race.

With 1,596 career points, Crosby is just four points shy of hitting the 1,600 milestone. Now we know he'll crack that figure donning a Pittsburgh Penguins jersey at the start of next season.
