Aaron Rodgers' New York Jets teammate put him in far worse situation than Zach Wilson

While Aaron Rodgers would liked to have performed better in his first full game as a New York Jet , it's fair to say that his defense did not give him much of a chance against the San Francisco 49ers .

The Jets have ranked highly when it comes to defensive metrics over the past few seasons, being one of the better units in the league despite their offense struggling mightily with Zach Wilson at quarterback as their starter for the previous three years.

But in their season opener against the Niners, their defense was taken apart with San Francisco registering over 400 yards of offense with over 170 on the ground while back-up running back Jordan Mason registered 147 and a touchdown. And incredibly, 94 yards of those came before contact - a showing of just how much the Jets' defensive line and linebackers struggled to stop the ground game.

While the Jets have never had the strongest run defense over the years, this had been a far cry from where they've been over the past few seasons - being a clear weakness that the Niners had exploited.

San Francisco, especially in the second quarter, were able to run the ball consistently which opened up the passing game for the opposing quarterback Brock Purdy - with the Niners scoring 13 points in the quarter before half-time.

The Niners dominance in running the ball saw them able to control the clock, having a whopping 38 minutes in time of possession while the Jets had the ball for 21:20 - the fewest time of possession by any Rodgers -led team in any start of his career.

San Francisco had come into the season with big questions around their offensive line, with many expecting the Jets' pass-rush and run defense to cause them issues throughout the game - but New York's defensive line struggled mightily with them needing to utilize it's defensive backs to get pressure on the quarterback.

The Jets will need to turn their run defense around quickly as they look to bounce back from the loss, with some fans hoping them to bring back former defensive tackle Al Woods - who was released this past offseason.

New York does have a favorable schedule in the next four games, with them set to face the Tennessee Titans, New England Patriots, Denver Broncos and Minnesota Vikings.
