Miami-Dade, FL - To combat student vaping nine Miami-Dade schools have installed vape sensors to detect and deter the addictive habit.

According to Miami-Dade School District officials, nine schools have already installed vape sensors in student bathrooms.

Sunset High School in West Kendall has suspended nine students for vaping incidents detected by these sensors.

Sunset High School’s principal, Rudy Rodriguez, explained that the vape detectors send alerts when the air quality reaches a certain threshold, indicating vaping activity.

Cameras outside the bathrooms are used to identify students who may have been involved.

Miami-Dade Public Schools is committed to addressing the issue of teen vaping.

The CDC reports that over 2 million students in the United States are using vaping devices.

In Miami-Dade County, the prevalence of e-cigarette use among teens has increased significantly over the past decade.

According to the University of Miami Health Education Center, the rate rose from 2.6% in 2012 to 16.5% in 2021.

While Miami-Dade Public Schools has not disclosed the names of all the schools with vape sensors installed, Miami Jackson High School and Homestead High School are among those using the technology.

Broward County Schools are exploring the possibility of implementing similar measures in their schools.
