Despite having just eight losses on his resume, there is a lot of pressure on Ryan Day to deliver this season at Ohio State . Pressure to bring home national championships is nothing new in Columbus but after watching Michigan win last season, Day is under a microscope.

But in Day’s eyes, there has been no change in the pressure he has as the head coach. The goals have remained the same for all six years he has been in charge of the program — beat Michigan to close out the regular season, win a Big Ten championship, be the last team standing in the postseason, no matter the College Football Playoff format.

“No, it hasn’t changed,” Day said via Tuesday’s episode of Andy & Ari On3 . “I remember that press conference. It was, you got to beat the team up North and you’ve got to win every game after that. That’s the job. But I never looked at it like ‘What if you don’t?’ I’ve always looked at it like ‘What if you do?’ and the opportunity Ohio State has to offer.”

A lot has been made about 2024’s Ohio State squad and the talent they have. Multiple people, including Urban Meyer , have called them one of the most talented college football rosters of all time. It’s a depth chart filled with experienced but key additions such as quarterback Will Howard , running back Quinshon Judkins , and safety Caleb Downs via the NCAA transfer portal.

The Buckeyes have been right there in recent years, most notably in 2022 when a missed field goal at the stroke of midnight meant Georgie went to the CFP title. Getting over the hump is a real thing for Day and he hopes the talent influx helps.

“We’ve been right there before,” Day said. “What is it going to take to make sure we get over the hump in those different spots. That’s where the focus is.”

Best case scenario, Ohio State tops the mountain and wins the program’s first national championship in over a decade. Surely, the pressure would be off Day and the pressure would be relaxed a bit.

Unfortunately, Day knows next year, no matter what unfolds in 2024, the bar will be just as high. Continuing to build for the future and making sure there is no drop-off is just as big of a part of the job.

“Trying to make every decision we possibly can to make sure that we understand this isn’t just right now,” Day said. “We have to win right now but we have to continue — we can’t have a dropoff. Making all those decisions is something you’ll learn year in and year out. You learn more about yourself as a coach.”
