Community alarmed by man dressed in Klan robes at Trump rally

MYSTIC, Conn. (WTNH) – Stonington Police received multiple complaints Saturday afternoon about what appeared to be a roadside Trump rally that featured a man dressed in Ku Klux Klan robes.

Police said the group appeared in front of Olde Mistick Village on Coogan Boulevard at 3:00 p.m. and stayed for about an hour.

Drivers passing by reported that the group carried signs with vulgar messages. Photos from the rally show a man in white robes with a white pointed hood covering his face holding a sign that read “Trump Endorsed by the KKK!”.

The group was monitored by police for the duration of the rally. No arrests were made.

“I wanted to extend my sincere gratitude to our Stonington Police officers for their handling of the recent event in Mystic,” First Selectman Danielle Chesebrough said in a written statement on Monday. “They were there to ensure the safety of our community, be sure no laws were broken and that the situation did not escalate. Our state brings together people with diverse views and perspectives, yet we are united in our commitment to ensuring all who lives in or visit feel welcomed, valued and safe. There is no place for hate in our shared communities, and I encourage all residents to stand together in support of this shared value.”
