A judge on Tuesday sentenced a former U.S. Marine sergeant from Watauga to 19 months in federal prison for his involvement in the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol riot.

According to prosecutors in Washington, McMahan played a significant role in the breach of the Capitol. They allege that he not only participated in the riot but aided others in gaining entry to the building. Despite acknowledging that police officers were performing their duties, McMahan has shown little remorse, prosecutors said.

On Jan. 6, 2021, McMahan arrived at the Capitol carrying a backpack containing a Kevlar helmet, a first aid kit, and a gas mask. He was among the first to break through police barriers and enter the Capitol. Presentence investigators noted that McMahan, a 42-year Marine veteran, has expressed no regret for his actions.

Prosecutors had recommended a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence for McMahan.
