Whiteface Mountain, New York stole the show this past weekend with skier Wesley Poe claiming the first ski day of the season, but Vermont got in on the action too.

Watch as fresh flakes fall near the summit of Jay Peak Resort, Vermont's snowiest ski resort, on September 8, 2024 in the video below.

Vermont's first flakes of the season didn't amount to any measurable accumulation, but snow is snow , as they say, and snowfall in September is something worth celebrating.

This year's first flakes come more than a month before last season's, when Jay Peak celebrated their first snowfall on October 22, 2023. Is an early first taste of winter a good omen for the coming season? That remains to be seen, but the Jay Peak faithful are certainly hoping so.

Meteorologist Chris Tomer is forecasting a 'Normal' season for nearly all of New England, including Jay Peak, in his recently released Winter 2024-2025 forecast . That should mean that Jay will finish this upcoming season with roughly 340 inches of snowfall, the most amongst any ski resort east of the Mississippi River.

Winter is coming, but not before Fall has a moment to shine. Jay Peak, and the state of Vermont, are known for putting on one of the best fall foliage shows in the world.

Despite last season being lackluster in terms of snowfall for much of the east coast, Jay Peak somehow inched past their annual average mark to the tune of 371 inches, not too shabby at all. A flurry of late-season spring storms, and a deep snowmaking base on the 'Jet' trail, allowed the resort to keep their lifts spinning until Sunday, May 12th, 2024. Killington was the only resort in the state of Vermont that lasted longer.

We're still 81 days away from Jay's targeted opening on November 29, 2024, but try telling that to the east coasters chomping at the bit for winter. 81 days? That's nothing when they've been waiting since May to get back on the slopes.

Winter is coming, are you ready?
