Following Sunday's announcement that Kendrick Lamar would be performing at this season's Super Bowl Halftime Show in New Orleans, rapper Nicki Minaj weighed in heavily on the choice, arguing that hometown hero Lil Wayne was dreadfully overlooked for the honor.

In a series of social posts, Nicki Minaj , who was discovered by Weezy and signed to his budding Young Money Entertainment in 2008, lambasted the Halftime Show’s co-producer, JAY-Z , for his choice of Kendrick as the 2025 headliner , saying Lil Wayne, should have gotten his flowers since the big game will be played in his hometown of New Orleans.

Nicki first leveled the accusation that the producers were, "Denying a young black man what he rightfully put into this game for no other reason but your ego,” adding, “Your hatred for BIRDMAN, Drake & Nicki got you punishing Lil Wayne?!?!!! LIL WAYNE!!!!!!!!!! THE GOAT?!!!!!!!!!!! Nola what’s good?!!!!!!”

Minaj continued, “God forbid if Wayne was to leave this earth right now, the culture would be in mourning. That’s why so many ppl keep saying to give our legends their flowers while they are still around to smell them. Sitting around all day playing games with ppl life & legacy.”

According to others, Nicki has a point. Birdman , Master P , Cam’ron , and Mase each recently said they believed the decision to deny Lil Wayne was due to a feud with Drake .

Finally, responding to a fan who did not believe that Lil Wayne was up to the task, Minaj argued Weezy "has not only pushed his pen the hardest, but gave the game more than 1 hip hop ICON as well on his watch," while adding that he was absolutely the right person to represent Hip-Hop. "The best RAPPER don’t represent the RAP GAME well enough 4u?," she asked. "Black ppl. Wow. If this don’t hurt your heart to read, it will one day. Look @ how our legends keep being treated. After they’ve given so much to us. Who are you?!!!! You GOD?!?!!!!!"

Super Bowl LIX, airing on Fox, is scheduled for February 9, 2025 at New Orleans' Caesars Superdome and will be Kendrick Lamar's second time on the big stage. Lamar was featured during Dr. Dre 's 2022 performance alongside Mary J. Blige , Snoop Dogg , Eminem , and 50 Cent .

Just last month, we learned that 50 Cent's appearance almost never was , until Eminem stepped in with an ultimatum. Let's all hope that Lil Wayne gets a pleasant phone call soon.

“I will not lie to you, I have not got a call,” Wayne said on YG ’s 4HUNNID podcast earlier this year regarding the Halftime Show. “But we all praying, we keeping our fingers crossed. I’m working hard. I’m going to make sure this next album and everything I do is killer, so I’m going make it very hard for them to… I want to just make it hard for them not to highlight the boy.”
